New Cinema Concept

Different sized pods that people could hire out for a couple of hours or for a day and use to either watch film, to dine and enjoy TV or to host a post holiday party and have the possibility to view video and photos during the event. The customers would be in control of what they would like to watch, choose any film or series they wish to view and have the ability to pause and rewind the digital information, access film facts or order food and drinks with the wireless Microsoft tabletop technology. The key in this project is the customer control within a multifunctional but intimate and carefully designed space. Each branch would hold five pods, a central bar, kitchens and toilets and therefore is self-sufficient. The use of ETFE throughout the complex will enable the generation of electricity and will control the amount of light that comes into the building and can also be lit up at night to create a sculptural effect.

The pods can have different configurations to cater for different events. The standard design would have a bar counter with Microsoft tabletop technology integrated in it and stools for the dining area and either a soft bean bag area to lounge and watch the film or recliner chairs for people who would rather have more conventional seating.

Moving Cinema Booths

Having studied the area around the chosen plot, I have found that there is not a lot of choice in terms of structures that can be hired out and used for small events, such as parties and conferences. I think that a space that would host such events and profiting of the views of the bay would be appreciated by the community.
The ground floor will offer a screening room that can hold up to 50 people with flexible seating which people can wheel around into the desired position, the seating will range from reclining chairs to sofas or armchairs to bean bags using textures and colours that create a homely atmosphere. When the film is finished, the chairs are easily moved to the edges of the room so that the floor can raise up and create the sunken dance-floor. Since the room has its own bar and toilets and has a smoking area, which is the balcony, it has everything to cater for a party and is easily adaptable for each individual’s needs. When the space is not hired out for private use, it can be used as a relaxing bar/cafe area where people can have drinks and relax while admiring the views of the bay.
The first floor is a restaurant that introduces a new concept. Each table is situated in its own booth, if people just want to come and dine and make the most of the views, or if the space is hired out for a private party, the booths will be set at a normal low level so that everyone can see each other and the views.
There is however another, more interesting idea to look at. You could have the option to dine and watch a film all in the comfort of your own, personal, booth. The sides of the booth can rise up to the ceiling and a door can be shut to create a private but cosy atmosphere. Using the table, which has Microsoft tabletop technology integrated in it, you could look through a back-catalogue and select any film you wish to watch. Using this system you would also have the possibility to look up information about films and actors and any other film-related information. You would also use this system to ask for assistance from a waiter/waitress, for example when you are ready to order your food. Using a surround sound integrated in the seating, the customer will be able to sit back, relax, enjoy the film and the food, also having the possibility to pause and rewind the film when needed.
This new concept would allow you to go out and enjoy a film in the privacy of your own individual booth, equipped with a high standard surround sound and using the latest tabletop technology, being able to choose any film or television series you wish and with the access to other information about films and cinema in general if required.

Urban Furniture

We were asked to design a piece of urban furniture that would also be a part of out pavilion project.
I designed this multifunctional sun lounger, which can be used as a bench when shut or can be hired out for the day as a sun lounger with integrated lockable storage areas.
At night, it becomes a sculpture with soft ambient lighting shining through the frosted glass.
This piece of furniture would be made of steel, bullet-proof frosted glass and the mattress inside would be made of memory foam and covered in brightly coloured fabric. It has hydraulic arms for the opening mechanism and the steel would be imprinted with various textures and words that users could discover when using it.

Shanghai World Expo 2010 - Australian Pavilion

In this project, we were asked to choose a country and design its pavilion for the Shanghai World Expo 2010.
I chose to represent Australia and used the Sydney Opera House as inspiration. My design would be constructed out of ETFE so that it could keep this sculptural shape and would be partially open in certain areas. It would have 6 different parts to it:
1) An interactive room with interactive flooring and touchscreen tables where visitors could learn about what Australia has to offer.
2 )A screening room showing films about Australia.
3) A cultural exhibition space.
4) A bar/restaurant serving Australian specialities and with views over the rest of the exhibition.
5) An underground story-telling room, where Australians and Aborigines would tell stories around camp fires.
6) Outdoor activities such as cricket, rugby, Australian football, climbing and abseiling and a pool with a wave machine where visitors could learn to surf.
